The Modesty Issue <\/p>\n
Currently, modesty is not being regarded as a virtue; rather it is seen as a tool of keeping women in their place. Also, modern men tend to be less explicit concerning their need for modesty, but still there is a propensity to disparage self-confident women as being immodest. Therefore from our society\u2019s perception, modesty is a gendered concept. The word modesty thus means both self-effacing as well as sexually pure, neither of which is intrinsically good, and both of which are practical to women more compared to men. Modesty is not all about being indecent or being improperly dressed. This is because an individual could be wearing a cloak and a Jedi robe and in his or her speech and conduct still be immodest. <\/p>\n
According to Lindy West, modesty starts as an attitude, and it comprises of all the decisions that individuals typically make in how they carry themselves beside the impression that they usually leave to others. It is defined by individuals\u2019 appearance, their words, and actions. In our societies, the issue of modesty has raised several questions and topics like modesty policing or slut-shaming that have negatively affected individuals precisely women in society.<\/p>\n
Currently, in many parts of the world, there exists a denial of the obligation of sexual modesty towards women and merriment of demonstrations of female desire. However, for proper gender parity, neither being sexually imminent nor reticent should be rendered as intrinsically superior. Individuals should not be forced to wear what they do not like and also they should not be prohibited from wearing one.<\/p>\n
I have come across some tall girls who find it impossible to get some shorts that stretch all down to their knees and also some huge women who would have a peek of cleavage in any blouse but a turtleneck. What the society usually does to this kind of individuals is making them feel ashamed about their bodies, or that they are immoral (Budworth & Mann, 2010). As a result it lowers their self-esteem. What should be acceptable for women to wear is modest attire, but their choice of dressing should not be interpreted as a reflection of ideal womanhood. The mode of dressing should not thus define one’s modesty, and therefore the society needs to look carefully at their reasoning behind the issue of modesty.<\/p>\n
