My personal experience, when I worked to enhance a community to which I feel connected, was during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time many families were affected; some lost their loved ones, and others lost their jobs. Since schools were closed during the pandemic, I could see the turn of events and how people struggled to survive, which broke my heart. For safety precautions, my mother was asked to work from home, and thus we traveled to live in the village since we assumed it could be safer there, considering the place was less populated. Living in the village made me feel connected to the Hispanic community, a chance I never got while we lived in the city. Therefore, I worked hard to enhance my community by providing food to the less fortunate ones.<\/p>\n
Since I did not have enough resources to cater to the needs of each individual in the community, I sought support from a charity organization in the city which offered me financial support. During this time, my mother supported me greatly, and I am thankful for everything she did for me. On Saturdays, I would do some shopping and then prepare food, which I packed into medium lunch boxes enough to feed one person. I would then take the food to the church within the community, where I could distribute it to people. Seeing the joy and happiness in people’s eyes as I gave them the lunch boxes gave me motivation and a reason to keep helping them.<\/p>\n
My charity work touched my people, and several fortunate ones joined me in serving our community. This time we could raise more funds and do some shopping which we distributed on Wednesdays. Since many people had lost their jobs following the safety guidelines brought about by the pandemic, many could not provide food for their families. Our efforts in supplying them with shopping meant a lot to them, and it made me happy to see that they were not starving.<\/p>\n
My efforts in serving this community are meaningful to me since I now understand how it feels to help someone in need. Besides, interacting with people from this community helped me learn Spanish. My friends volunteered and assisted me in learning Spanish so that I could easily communicate with the people I was helping. Learning Spanish during the pandemic has been helpful in my Spanish classes. In addition, my effort in serving this community is meaningful because some families blessed me with Rosaries, which I treasure, as it was an honor to receive them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
