Shetterly used secondary sources that documented the lives of the women as their broke barriers and rose up the ranks of NASA. The women gave accounts of their experiences at work including discrimination they faced based on gender and race; and how their abilities helped them overcome these barriers. The book is very successful at passing its main ideas across. The main thing that the author wished to achieve is to reflect on the lives of the black women while they worked for NASA.
