The Five Sexes

The issue of sexuality is explicitly covered in this article and the assertion put across about five sexes sounds rather true. In the real sense, the society has been so much focused on two sexes based on genitalia. This is in total disregard to possible hormonal inconsistency that eventually overrides the type of genitalia one has. In regard to the opinion of the writer and further emphasis of the student, it is worth to note that gender and sex require critical assessment before being assigned. Considering the statistics on the overall intersexual newborns, it is appropriate to introduce all the classifications to minimize the growing emerging cases of reversing gender. Research from the field of health science and medicine continue to emphasize on a picture of only two possible sexes of female and male. There is a complete omission of important facts that incorporate the other three sexes as advanced by Anne Fausto-Sterling.

It is a common experience in the growing liberal society to find the other three sexes ignored turning out in their true colors. This can be attributed to the dictated genitalia based sexual orientation and gender definition. It is important to realize that to make such occurrences normal to the society; it would be important to accept them so that they may make a personal decision on which side of the two they wish to pursue. Determination of sexes needs to go beyond genitalia which are primarily the focal point of “the institutions of science and medicine and advances in physiology” and incorporate the social aspect of the resulting identity of the person.

It is in essence important that the assigned gender in the understanding of the society capture the five sexes as this a biological reality that cannot easily be influenced by medical surgery.
