Indian Classical music is one of the ancient and finest art forms of the world, and this can be attributed to its beauty and entertainment qualities. There are two main styles of the Indian Classical music, and this includes the Hindustani onto the north and Carnatic on to the south, with each of the forms having their unique sets of instruments as well as sonic characteristics. Despite having a different set of instruments and sonic characteristics, they both have a common intention of music.
Raga is the basic structure of the Indian Classical music and means the which colors the mind. The composition is the face of raga and defines its essence through bringing together all the movements, subtleties and parts. The power of raga composition tends to lie in the ability to evoke emotions which captivates the audience. There are two sets of raga, divided according to their effects on the human senses and these include the morning and the evening ragas. There are over 300 ragas in the Indian Classical music, and according to the textbook, the distinction between one type of raga to the other can be identified through a set of characteristics such as king, queen notes as well as the unique note phrase refer to as pakad.
According to the video by Ravi Shankar, there are more than 72 different octaves, and raga is based on one of them, and because the musician has the ability to improvise the rage, there can exist various types of ragas in the Indian Classical music. He emphasis on the significance of the notes and the pakad on the composition of raga, and as well explains how hard it is to identify the type of raga without identifying the name of the pakad of the raga.
The Indian classical music is interesting though complex as it contains so many octaves, despite being complex it is distinct from western music. The Indian classical music serves as the spiritual purpose and has the ability to positively affect and as well enhance an individual’s mental, intellectual capacity, and this makes it more distinct from the other types of music as doesn’t only serve the entertainment purpose. Due to its complexity, the masterly of the raga in Indian classical music, therefore, demands a lot of dedication to learn and as well train hard. I also found that raga is an essential part of the Indian lives as the raga is divided into two, the morning and evening ragas and this depicts the importance that raga serves to the people of India.
