Introduction
There is a strong relationship between the mind and body, despite the fact that many people wrongly assume they are two separate creatures. Having a good mental state may be beneficial to a person’s physical health. When the mental health of a person is not in good condition, both the physical and mental health may suffer (Fox, 2015). Poor mental health leads to an immune system that is compromised. As a consequence, a person who is experiencing emotional problems is more likely to get influenza or another sickness. Additionally, it may be difficult for someone who is suffering stress, worry, or melancholy to take adequate care of their health. It is possible for an individual to lack the motivation to participate in physical activity, eat nutritious meals, or take prescribed medication. Problems may arise if a person consumes excessive amounts of alcohol, cigarettes, or other drugs (Randler et al., 2017). Back discomfort, chest pain, a dry mouth, excessive fatigue, and changes in appetite are other indications of poor mental health. Chronic stress may weaken the immune system, disrupt the hormonal balance of the body, and deplete the chemicals in the brain that promote happiness. Negative feelings and thoughts, such as hopelessness and helplessness, may lead to chronic stress. It has been established that chronic stress increases our chance of early mortality. Several health conditions, like as infections, high blood pressure, heart disease, digestive problems, and infections, have been linked to uncontrolled or mismanaged hostility. This report presents that negative emotions negatively affect the mind-body balance and health causing a host of issues to the person while positive emotions lead to a better outlook on life causing better physical and mental health.
What is Emotion?
Emotions are very potent drivers of behavior. They shape a person’s perspective on life depending on the situations they are currently facing and the surroundings they are surrounded by (Panksepp, 2005). They enable people to better understand and connect with one another, so providing them with the possibility to share in the joy or misery experienced by others. First impressions of the day are often accurate predictors of how a person will feel throughout the rest of the day. In addition to this, one’s emotional state may have a significant influence on their overall health and well-being (Åhäll & Gregory, 2013). The first step in achieving and maintaining excellent mental health is increasing one’s self-awareness, which includes one’s thoughts, emotions, and actions. The process of acquiring the skills necessary to successfully navigate the demands and challenges of everyday life is an ongoing component of existence. A healthy self-perception as well as healthy connections with other people are necessary components of overall wellness. A person’s mental health may be adversely affected by a wide variety of life situations, some of which can be very severe. As a direct result of these experiences, individuals could have extreme feelings of hopelessness, stress, or concern (Babayan et al., 2019). It is possible for even positive or favorable change to result in the same level of stress as negative change. Experiencing a pandemic on a global scale, quitting a job, getting pregnant, coping with the loss of a loved one, getting married or divorcing, being diagnosed with an underlying condition, being in an accident, getting a promotion at work, coping with financial difficulties, moving, and having a child either biologically or through adoption are some examples of life-altering events that can cause stress.
The four primary emotions that humans experience are happiness, anger, grief, and sorrow (Price & Hooven, 2018). These four emotions pervade every facet of a person’s life and are always there. It is possible to classify it into two distinct groups: positive and negative. There are many different ways in which happy feelings may be beneficial to the human body, lead to increased human activity, and motivate people to put in a lot of effort. People who suffer from anxiety and depression have a reduced capacity for physical stamina and vitality, which can make them feel tired or lose interest in the activities that they normally engage in on a daily basis. Additionally, this can hinder their ability to move or react quickly or effectively.
Understanding Emotions: A Personal Experience and Example
One of my best friends from junior high school struggled with clinical depression because of the pressures he faced at school and at home. When she was well, she weighed 100 pounds, but when she became sick, she was unable to eat and swiftly lost 30 pounds, bringing her weight down to 70. She used to take part in the recess sports on a regular basis, but after being ill with the illness, she discovered that she was too weary to continue participating. My epiphany was the fact that one’s mental and physical health are inextricably linked to one another. Please be so kind as to explain the meaning of the word “feeling” to me. A person’s degree of emotion may be influenced by a number of factors, including their environment, their mood, and their relationships with other people. We all have both positive and bad feelings inside of us at any given time. When we’re having a good time together, you’ll believe that no matter what happens, everything will turn out all right. On the other hand, if you are in a very terrible mood, you could start to notice unfavorable events even if they do not truly exist. This is because your perception of reality is being affected. How, therefore, may having access to a larger variety of sensations improve one’s mental and physical well-being? This is a topic that interests me, and I want to get more knowledge about it throughout this course.
The Mental Health
It has been said that the brain is the “hardware” that allows us to experience the thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and emotions that we refer to as “ideas” as a collective term. Hormones and neurotransmitters are two examples of chemical and physical messengers that are used in the process of communication. In point of fact, researchers have discovered the specific neural network that links the cerebral cortex to the adrenal medulla, which is the part of the body that triggers a reaction in response to a stressful event (Levine et al., 2021). These discoveries provide new insight into the mechanisms by which mental states such as stress and sadness influence the functioning of organs. According to the findings of the research, negative feelings might lower immunity by disrupting the normal function of blood cells. In one of their studies, the researchers observed that stress decreased the reactivity of white blood cells to both cancer cells and infectious organisms.
In addition, those who were stressed recovered more slowly and their immune systems responded less favorably to immunizations. The research also discovered that talking treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, improved cellular function, which, in turn, improved the body’s capacity to defend itself against illness. Both cognitive behavioral therapy and the mind-body link have a tight relationship with one another, but to a lesser extent. People’s ideas and actions have the power to modify their neurobiology, and the relationship between our stress levels and our physical health is a two-way street.
How do emotions affect a person’s health?
Regarding this matter, there are two possible outcomes at this point. The first scenario is one in which the mind is influenced by the body. There are many aspects of your life, such as a pandemic or getting fired from your work, that have the potential to negatively impact your mental health. A person’s thoughts, feelings, and actions all have an effect on how your body reacts (Priya & Kalra, 2018). There is a relationship between the mind and the body. Your body goes through a series of physiological changes whenever you feel worried, nervous, or unhappy. For instance, I sprained my hand today, and as a result, I won’t be able to go play ball. This time, however, my buddy is really eager to come to me to play ball, and I anticipate that my mood will suffer as a result since I won’t be able to play ball with my friend because of my injury.
The second possibility is that one’s mental state might influence their physical state. Your physical health might suffer when you dwell on unhappy thoughts and feelings. Negative attitudes and feelings of helplessness and hopelessness can lead to chronic stress, which can disrupt the hormonal balance of the body, deplete the brain of chemicals necessary for happiness, and compromise the immune system. These effects can be avoided by maintaining a positive outlook on life and avoiding negative emotions. Stress that lasts for long periods of time might really cut our life span short. To give you an example, when my brother disobeyed me at school and the teacher called the parents to talk, my mother, as the person who helped my brother make amends, didn’t need to go into labor without affecting her body (Zhang et al., 2019). However, she was already mentally strained, which caused her to feel physically tired even though she hadn’t used her body much. Emotions can affect people’s personality development. People who live under depression, melancholy or fear for a long time have an eccentric personality, poor ability to interact with people and are unpopular. When people are in a negative mood, they will lower their evaluation of themselves and make such attributions as “I always fail” and “I am not capable”. When I am depressed, I always feel that I will fail in everything I do, will be very bad.

Anxiety and nervousness, when properly regulated, can lead to “learned helplessness,” which is the inability to “always” solve a problem. When I need to study, if I am in a calm mood, I can complete my studies very efficiently. On the contrary, when I am impatient, it is difficult for me to understand whatever knowledge is in my head.

The Effect of Emotions on Intelligence

The intelligence of a person may be gauged not just by their IQ, but also by their memory, reasoning, creativity, imagination, and a great deal of other things. It is important that participants in the research have a good attitude and practice “happy learning,” since doing so will increase the effectiveness of the study. Because unpleasant feelings not only do not contribute to an improvement in academic achievement, but also have an influence on the effectiveness of learning. People who cultivate feelings that are beneficial to themselves and to others are more likely to experience intelligence growth and academic success (Hamzah et al., 2018). It is plain to observe that members of certain social elites as well as persons who have outstanding intellect tend to be fearless, serene, and cheerful. They are able to remain levelheaded in the face of adversity, think clearly, and make sound decisions. They do not experience extreme swings in their emotions.
Depression and other mental diseases appear more frequently as the pressure of city life continues to rise. The reason for this is that most people are unable to cultivate a positive attitude, so they are unable to adjust themselves in the face of pressure and negative emotions, and as a result, they sink deeper and deeper into depression. Failure is the mother of success, but also to educate people to create a positive attitude, failure should not discourage you, you should not give up, you should not collapse, and you will find a chance to make a return. Some irritable people just can’t control their emotions in this environment, because of some small things and sudden heart disease, which has a serious impact on health (Uchino & Rook, 2020). It may prevent you from feeling lonely, alone, or inadequate, and if you have a positive outlook on yourself, you will be able to deal with stress more effectively. People that are close to you, such as friends and loved ones, may be reliable sources of advise and provide fresh perspectives on how to address problems (Fredrickson, 2000). As an example, the last two weeks of the previous semester were one of the busiest and most taxing times for me personally. This was due to the fact that I had to complete presentations and tests in five different courses. Because of this, I was under a significant amount of strain, and as a result, I worked really hard every day throughout that period. At that moment, the notion of phoning my mother crossed my mind. When I did call her, I discussed the predicament I was in with her, and she was extremely reasonable in her encouragement of me as well as the guidance and time management solutions she provided. After having that talk, I felt as if both my mind and my body had been unblocked, and as a result, I didn’t have to endure as much pain.
Lifestyle Change
Making adjustments to your lifestyle in order to improve both your physical and mental health is recommended. You may attempt to ease the negative feelings and stress that are causing your physical and mental difficulties by engaging in an activity that is both calming and pleasant. Altering your lifestyle by, for instance, devoting a portion of each day to physical activity or making travel arrangements might be an effective method for reducing stress (Tugade, Fredrickson, & Feldman Barrett, 2004). If you plan on utilizing travel as a means of relaxation, you should also make an effort to take things at a more leisurely pace while you are away. People who have jobs these days often book their vacations as soon as the Christmas break begins. The whole of the traveling process is also in a state of tension, which may cause additional consumption of physical energy and defeats the objective of spending vacation time to allow the body relax and recuperate from the stresses of the year. This is the cause of vacation tiredness syndrome, which manifests itself after lengthy travel.
Education and Training
Educating oneself on how to deal with stress is also important. You need to increase your awareness so that you can confront stress with ease and lessen the bad affects it has on you so that you don’t let it harm your physical and mental health, which may happen if it isn’t managed correctly. The last item is about getting enough rest and maintaining a healthy diet. This will have a direct bearing on your physical health; at the very least, if you adhere to a well-planned diet and get enough of rest, you will be less susceptible to being beaten down by the negative emotions that are stored in your body (Kok et al., 2013). Your body’s defense mechanisms may become less effective if you have poor mental health. During emotionally trying times, this makes you more likely to get a cold or any other illness since it lowers your immune defenses. When you are experiencing negative emotions such as stress, anxiety, or anger, it’s possible that you aren’t taking as good of care of your health as you should be. Headaches, sleeplessness, and maybe even additional symptoms are possible outcomes of this situation. Learn to control your thoughts and emotions, keep your mind in a steady condition in response to a variety of outside stimuli, and if you find yourself experiencing bad emotions by mistake, learn how to transfer them out in an acceptable manner while avoiding excessive emotional stimulation. Consider the issue from a constructive angle; if you can’t alleviate the anxiety in your chest, it will be healthy for you to express your feelings, and you’ll be able to reach mental equilibrium as a result of the release. When I was nearing the deadline for my dissertation, I had problems sleeping and even lost sleep since I was always thinking about how to write my paper throughout the weekdays. I agree with this statement because that was the reason why I lost sleep. I also found out later the negative effects that this stress had on me, and the solution that I came up with was that whenever I had a lot of thoughts in my head, I would go to the bathroom and wash my face to wake up and let all of the mess in my head filter out. This worked for me whenever I had a lot of thoughts in my head. After cleaning my face, I immediately have a sense of mental clarity and am able to resume thinking about things in a regular fashion.
Conditioning Bodies to Channel Positive Emotions
The next consideration is that we need to educate ourselves on the significance of experiencing happy feelings. Under certain conditions, it is possible for each and every emotion, both happy and negative, to be adaptive. It would seem that striking a balance between the two is the most important thing to do. Feelings of joy and contentment help us open our minds to new concepts and increase the scope of our awareness. Negative feelings are necessary for people to endure challenging circumstances and behave in a manner that is suitable in the immediate term. People who are in a good mood are less likely to experience negative emotions and are better equipped to bounce back quickly from setbacks (Kok et al., 2013). The term for this characteristic is resilience. The capacity to enjoy the good moments and maintain a cheerful mood for extended periods of time is another indication of a healthy emotional state. Optimism has been linked to enhanced health in a number of ways, including lower blood pressure, a decreased risk of heart disease, a healthier weight, better blood sugar levels, and a longer life expectancy. Studies have revealed a connection between optimism and greater health. Maintaining a healthy emotional state requires maintaining an openness to beneficial change. Feelings of happiness broaden our perspective of the world, which in turn stimulates more inventiveness, curiosity, and freedom of choice. Over time, having happy feelings allows emotional resilience to grow and strengthens the foundation upon which it is built. We need to overcome our negative bias because, as a species, we are naturally protective in the face of danger and the loss of life, and as a result, we have a tendency to give more weight to the negative than the positive. The reality is that this “negative bias” is ineffective for the vast majority of us, despite the fact that it is an ingenious method of self-preservation for those who need to be on high alert in potentially harmful circumstances. Emotional rehabilitation may occur when one experiences positive feelings. The aim that science has assigned to positive emotions is to assist the body in recovering from the harmful consequences that prolonged negative emotions might have. Therefore, developing a more optimistic outlook may, over time, assist us in being more robust in the face of adversity or stress. When confronted with a natural catastrophe, some people’s bad emotions take over and they begin to whine and pray, entirely losing the capacity to act and think clearly. This is something that I have seen played out in a number of disaster movies. On the other hand, individuals that are optimistic and positive will be the first to start thinking about solutions and execution, which is a difference that is very easily observable between the two emotions.
Gratitude
The expression of gratitude is another crucial component in treating both one’s physical and emotional wellness. The appreciation of the positive aspects of life and the sense of thankfulness may have a significant effect on one’s mental wellbeing. Seminal research found that participants who were instructed to count their blessings reported higher levels of happiness, engaged in more physical activity, had less symptoms of illness, and slept better than those who were forced to list their complaints. The impact of forgiving someone is quite similar. Experiments have shown that practicing forgiveness is connected with improved immune function and a longer life expectancy (Uchino & Rook, 2020). This association was shown to be positive in both cases. Other research has revealed that the impact that forgiveness has on the heart is more than a metaphor; it may truly decrease our blood pressure and enhance the health of our cardiovascular system. As an objective matter of fact, thankfulness and forgiveness are both characteristics of a decent heart. This implies that so long as you are a wonderful person of good will, you are less likely to be plagued by both your physical and mental health and emotions.
Training the Mind
Meditation and yoga have been shown to have beneficial effects on the body and the brain. To give you an example, my mother was so stressed out by the responsibility of looking after my brother that she enrolled in a daily yoga session. She shared with me that when she does yoga, it is really peaceful and relieves her of a lot of external tension. She also said that subsequently, it has a very beneficial impact on both her mind and body.
Nutritional Health
The last aspect is the relationship that exists between proper diet and both the mind and the body. What we put into our body may have an effect on not just our physical but also our mental wellbeing. What we put in our bodies has the potential to either prevent or assist reverse problems with mental health. The relationship between what we eat and how we feel has been the subject of much study, including the seminal Smile Experiment. I’ll use myself as an example since I’m a major body fanatic, and when I’m trying to lose fat, I make sure to maintain a tight rein on how much carbohydrate, salt, and sugar I consume. This control, in combination with strength training, has the potential to bring about a change in my physical appearance; nevertheless, the majority of the credit goes to this diet, which is low in carbon, low in salt, and does not include any sugar consumption (Uchino & Rook, 2020). My emotions often become unmanageable, and I experience changes in mood due to the smallest of triggers. I am easily sidetracked. These are some of the correlations that I have seen between proper diet and the health of both my mind and body.
Body Fitness
Regular exercise has been shown to have positive effects on both a person’s physical and mental health. A significant number of age-related indicators, such as muscle mass, strength, aerobic ability, bone density, and cholesterol, are all positively influenced by regular exercise. Physical activity not only maintains a youthful appearance of the body, but it also maintains mental acuity and fosters emotional well-being. In addition, research has shown that engaging in physical exercise causes biochemical changes in the brain that enhance its capacity to learn, adapt, and carry out other cognitive activities. Stress and depression may both be alleviated and reversed by engaging in physical activity. Prior to having my body keyed, I had terrible physical posture, including a bent back and a hipbone that was rotated in the other direction. These made it seem as if my whole body had shrunk. However, after doing the keystone exercise, I noticed an improvement in my posture.
Sufficient Sleep
Sleeping for sufficient amounts of time and in a peaceful manner is essential to maintaining both one’s physical and mental health. A lack of sleep may, over time, throw off the natural equilibrium of the body, make our immune system less effective, cause us to gain weight and experience despair, and speed up the natural aging process. Studies have shown that the time of sleep is when your fat-burning levels are at their highest in the day. This is why many people get up in the morning to weigh themselves and find that they have experienced significant weight loss over the course of the previous night. If you align your sleep cycle with the rhythm of the universe, you can get the highest quality sleep possible. When I don’t get enough sleep, I feel fatigued the following day, both physically and mentally. I have no motivation to accomplish anything, and I’m more likely to become sick unexpectedly. However, if I get enough sleep the night before, I won’t feel drowsy the following day and I’ll be in fantastic physical and mental condition, which will result in a big improvement in my athletic performance.
Conclusion
Overall emotional states do have an effect on physiological and psychological well-being. There are a lot of treatments and preventative strategies available for these types of physical and mental illnesses now. More methods to eliminate mental and physical diseases are needed, and I hope that they will be found in the future. Let the poisons of your heart out. Once you’ve identified your toxic emotions and made a decision on what to let go of, it’s important to write down the specific ways in which your life will improve as a result of the decision. Thereafter, you might publicly declare your decision to let go of your resentments via a meaningful rite. Even I have bad things happen to me that make me feel awful on the inside. When I was feeling anxious or upset, I would work out at the gym. Try to have a nice belly laugh every day. Physically and mentally, laughing is an elegant phenomenon that has been demonstrated to lower stress hormone production and increase immune system function. In addition to improving their immune systems, people with rheumatoid arthritis may reduce their pain and stress hormone levels by hearing funny tales. This is, in my opinion, why so many people, after a long day at the office, tune in to a comedic talk show at night.
