How can students use judgments of learning to improve the efficiency of their study
Question 3.How can students use judgments of learning to improve the efficiency of their study? What are the potential drawbacks of relying on judgments of learning? How have these drawbacks been tested?
Judgment of learning can improve the students’ efficiency in learning. Judgement of learning are defined as the assessments that people make concerning how well they have mastered a particular topic that they have learned. In students it can be seen as a strategy they use to assess how well they may be able to answer a particular question or they may remember something and they may answer it if given a chance. Successful learning entirely depends on the ability to monitor learning. Judgments of learning ensures that the students allocate study time and that will ensure that the students are efficient in their study and it also reflect in their performance. Judgements of learning enable the students to accurately monitor and review what they have learned, make decisions about the subjects and the materials they should read next or the subjects they need to put in effort and the time they should cover as they study. Such important practices are associated with improved performance in class. Judgements in learning has also contributed to the efficiency in study in that, after the students have reviewed what they are studying and found out that there are specific areas that require polishing, they go back to their text books to restudy what they did not get it well and in so doing they will certainly do well in their exams. Judgements of learning guide the learning of students and it affects their performance.
The potential drawbacks of relying on judgements of learning is that it is time consuming as an individual may spend a lot of time what they read in few minutes and having to go back to reread what they had read earlier is heart breaking. The other drawback of relying on the judgement of learning is that it may lead to potentially poorer performance on the test. When students devote a lot of time to learn a particular issues which may not be tested on. They may not be able to justify their reasoning and they may not have a fact-based learning that can be rewarded.
The drawbacks for learning can be tested by taking some competency based test. The assessment may highlight on the usefulness and the success of judgement of learning as a learning and a memory enhancing strategy. By conducting behavioral observations the judgement of learning may also be assessed and the drawbacks of relying on the strategy seen. The behavioral observation include the scores of the appropriate rubrics as well as the verbal analysis and measuring the understanding of the learners on the particular subject matter. The measure of attitudes and the perceptions of the learners can also be an important strategy of measuring the drawbacks of relying on the judgment of learning strategy. The measure may bring to light how the students feel and their thoughts on the strategy as well as the benefits and the challenges associated with the judgement of learning strategy.
