Chapter 1

Chapter 1 explains why educational achievement matters and as an individual, a higher levels of education implies higher earnings, an improved health as well as an increased life span. It addresses the economic quality of an individual teacher and enhances the quality of the teaching force. The chapter reflects on a teacher’s interests and motivations in the field of teaching (Wiliam, 2011, p. 3-5).

The chapter adds value to the concept of teaching and learning by addressing the essential benefits achieved in education especially the role of education in the prosperity of a nation. It describes how significance of education has increased over time. Teaching and learning entails impartation of knowledge and skills amongst individuals thus boosting their understanding and intelligence since the learners receive answers existing in almost all areas of knowledge. The author explains in the chapter that teaching and learning incorporates appropriate knowledge and skills that are vital in the development of both the society and individuals (Wiliam, 2011, p. 3-5).

As a Health and Physical Education teacher at the high school level, the chapter helps in associating the discipline’s importance and the society or world outside the classroom. It highlights the significance of studying Health and Physical Education in terms of better health care and increased life span. This is important for the class because the students need to understand the benefits associated with studying the subject. The role played by education including Health and Physical education is very relevant and significant to every learner.

Chapter 2

On a personal level, the chapter describes that particular level of teaching when I am most effective. It encourages and instills confidence in me by arguing that a long serving teacher is likely to positively influence a student better than a long serving teacher (Wiliam, 2011, p. 27-30). The author points out that a student taught by an experienced teacher learns more by making an extra half-month’s progress. This makes the chapter important in showing that experience in teaching as well as improvement is worth having.

The chapter adds value to the concept of teaching and learning by focusing on the teacher professional development. It defines the level of teachers’ effectiveness in their work . Moreover, the chapter opposes the fact that professional development serving teachers is a statutory requirement in many jurisdictions despite the fact that they are loosely worded. Professional development, according to the other should be enhanced amongst teachers to enhance their productivity in class (Wiliam, 2011, p. 27-30).

Health and Physical Education largely relate with professional development and every teacher is normally required to complete some hours of professional development standards that may help in promoting the content knowledge of the class. The chapter addresses the teachers understanding of Health and Physical education and confidence of the class in them. Teachers’ achievements in class delivery ought to meet the standard of achievement expected of a High School.

Chapter 3

The chapter adds value to my personal level by stressing on the power of understanding what I am doing. It explains the fact that a teacher needs to have a deep knowledge of what they are doing. It enables me put emphasis on both the first and the second way of thinking and intelligently consider what I am supposed to deliver to students (Wiliam, 2011, p. 52-55). I have realized the need to put emphasis on the content of a particular topic and encouraging students’ understanding towards the topic instead of assuming that all students are equal. Generally, the chapter has reminded me of the previous assumptions I had regarding students and turned me into a more alert individual who strongly values the aspects of power of understanding.

The concept of learning and teaching requires that students should understand and deeply absorb what they are doing. Knowledge and skills are the mainstay of teaching and learning thus making them (knowledge and skills) to deserve plenty of concern and getting plenty of attention. In teaching and learning, students are required to garner knowledge and skills through understanding so that they can put them to work (Wiliam, 2011, p. 53-55). The chapter focusses on the power of understanding just like the teaching and learning concept.

The material relates to my classroom by providing the essentials of a student’s understanding of the Health and Physical Education. Student’s alertness and understanding are very significant factors in my classroom. The chapter relates to my classroom by emphasizing on the learning intentions and understanding of every student in my class. My classroom requires a high level of attention from both the teacher’s and student perspectives just like the chapter addresses.
