Choosing a nursing home for an elderly family member can among the most difficult decisions one can ever make. The fact that one is being moved to a nursing home shows that the person is in a vulnerable state and hence will depend on the care provided within the facility. Some of the factors to consider include the location of the nursing home (Karen, 2009). The nursing home chosen should be in a location that is convenient to family members and friends. The location is important since it affects how often family and friends can visit their loved one in the facility. If a patient is frequently visited, their emotional and mental wellbeing is going to be improved. Frequent visit also provide room for family members to ensure any quality of care issues that arise are addressed immediately. The nursing home should be located near a hospital in case a medical emergency arises.
Another factor to consider when choosing a nursing home is the size of the facility (Karen, 2009). A large home has room to provide more activities as compared to a small home. On the other hand a smaller home creates room for more personal care. Therefore, there is need to decide on what is best for the family member. It is also important to consider the quality of the services provided in the home and not just the quantity.
Another factor to put into consideration while choosing a nursing home is the mental and emotional wellbeing of the patients in the home (Karen, 2009). One should find out the activities that the home has planned for the residents each day. The home should have a well planned program of scheduled events such as weekly musical events, physical exercises, educational classes, and other social activities. The home should have a safe place like enclosed gardens where the patients can enjoy outdoor areas. The home should also organize for the residents to take part in cultural events and special community occasions.
