EXSC 3200 Psychosocial Aspects of Health and Wellness
Annotated Bibliography Assignment
Purpose:The purpose of this assignment is to:
(1) explore the resources available to our profession online and in the library collection,
(2) learn to find peer reviewed articles from professional journals,
(3) learn to collect articles and place them in an annotated bibliography in American Psychological Association (APA) style, and
(4) learn what plagiarism is and how to avoid plagiarizing in your college work.
Assignment:In our library time, we will learn how to find peer reviewed journals from the resources that are available to us at GGC, as well as hear an explanation of plagiarism. In your own time, you will search for 10 peer reviewed articles over a variety of topics related to exercise & sport psychology only. You must collect a variety of articles (e.g., they cannot all be on exercise adherence). This is an overview class, thus, your assignment is to explore the entire spectrum of possibilities (please see the potential topics list – last page). At least FIVE of the articles chosen should integrate a theoretical framework in the study. Once you have collected your articles you must assemble an annotated bibliography in APA format.
The purpose of this type of bibliography is to help you learn how to write and think scientifically through the summation of the articles and through critique and application of the articles. Be certain that you are not plagiarizing any information from the original source. This assignment must be typed and submitted online via D2L in the Assignment box.
Literature reviews and editorial articles should not be used for this assignment. Only use quantitative studies for this assignment.Due Date: April 25th, by 10 p.m.

1. The accuracy of your citation,
2. The care you take in following the directions in assembling your articles,
3. The articles you document (at least FIVE of them must contain a theoretical framework used for the study),
4. The clarity of your short article summary,
5. The accuracy of your article critique (limitations),
6. The clarity of your article application,
and6. the variety of articles which you submit.
Annotated Bibliography Assignment Directions
Please list your name at the top right of the page. Use only size 12 font with 1” margins. Double-space the document. Citations should be numbered and placed in two sections. The first section should include the five articles related to theory. The second section should include the five other articles. Alphabetize each section and separate the sections with section headers.
Format the paper in two sections, including headings for each section. See example below:

All articles referenced must be original research articles (experiments) from peer reviewed journals. Do not use the following: short communications, summaries, reviews, meta-analyses, magazine articles, books, conference abstracts, etc.
All articles must include articles covering exercise & sport psychology topics only (see potential topics last page). The article cannot be a biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor learning, etc. article. If you are not sure, it is the responsibility of the student to clear the article with me first by sending an email with a pdf, title of the article or a link for my approval.
At least FIVE of the articles chosen should integrate a theoretical framework in the study presented. These articles should be placed in the first section of the annotated bibliography.
You may not turn in turn in any assignment for the class that you have used in a previous class. If you do so the assignment will be flagged for plagiarism because of the “TurnItIn” software. You will be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct for GGC and will be reported to the Student Integrity Office. Do not plagiarize. You should list the article as a citation in APA format and then write a concise paragraph of the information contained in the article. Be pithy and to the point. Tell me the purpose of the study, the population examined, a summary of the methodology, and what the researchers found. Include a synopsis of your critique of the article and the potential application of the article. Keep it simple. Make sure you are mindful of spelling and grammar and that you use complete sentences.
The bibliography should be numbered and listed in alphabetical order according the first author in the reference for each section.

Below is an example of how the annotated bibliography articles should be summarized and assessed:
1. Brothen, T., & Wambach, C. (2000). Using factual study questions to guide reading and promote Mastery Learning by developmental students in an introductory psychology course. Journal of College Reading and Learning, 30(2), 158-166.
Brothen and Wambach (2000) suggest that students merely read the chapter summaries and scan the text, searching for keywords. Hence, an ML based technique known as Keller’s Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) was implemented in an introductory psychology college course. This study focused on the abilities of students to comprehend the readings assigned from the course’s textbook. One hundred thirty- six students from classes participated in this study. Students were handed a study guide composed of specific questions from the readings. The study guide was graded, and the students were given several opportunities to correct the guide successfully. In order to complete the study guide, students had to read their textbooks.
Furthermore, exercises were completed on computers until eighty percent mastery was achieved. Students were allowed five attempts on a specific quiz (i.e., randomly selected questions from a pool of questions), and the best score was recorded. While the study guide served as the pretest, the computerized quiz score served as the posttest. When comparing pretest and posttest scores, a dependent t test is often implemented. When implementing a significant dependent t test, inferences can be made. On the contrary, correlational analyses are descriptive in nature and are, hence, used to make predictions.
The results were significant (r = .86, p < .001). In addition, the mean pretest score was 9.59/10, and the mean posttest score was 7.45/10. Furthermore, 10.7% of the students did not complete the study questions. In order to determine if there was a relationship between incompletion of the study questions and quiz achievement, a partial correlational analysis was implemented. The results were significant (r = -.49, p < .05). Although the analysis was not exactly appropriate, the data was collected via a reasonable attempt. Hence, the data collection sections are the most appropriate in this study.
The study results indicate that among study participants, poor scores related to quiz achievement were associated with incompletion of study questions. These results imply the importance of completing study methodologies to enhance achievement on quizzes.
Key advice for this assignment:
Please use your time wisely and take the extra time to go over these directions diligently. Late submissions will not be accepted. Read the grading rubric to make sure you have included the things that will be graded for each article summarized and reviewed.
Major mistakes I typically see:
References must be in APA format.
Number the references. Each section should contain numbers 1 through 5.
Put your references in alphabetical order according to the first author of each article within each section.
Do not use a review article. All articles must be quantitative experiments (no meta-analysis, no systematic review).
Make sure at least five of the articles incorporate a theoretical framework.
Do not plagiarize, use your own words.
Go through every line of the directions when you are done to make sure you have everything covered (print off the directions and grading rubric -follow them closely).
