Responses on Human Services

By way of introduction, my name is XX. I call the state of XX home. I come from a small family of 5, and I have two siblings. My parents and siblings are the closest people in my life and they mean the world to me. Besides my immediate family, I have a couple of friends that I consider family. My best friend is one of them. We have been friends for nearly a decade now. We grew up together in the same neighborhood and our families have always been close to each other. We are usually together most of the time and we always enjoy each other’s company. I identify as an African American, and my nationality is American. I speak English and Spanish, and I am not religious. I enjoy taking part in outdoor activities. My hobbies include writing, reading, swimming and baking. I am also passionate about community service and positively impacting society.

In my understanding, human services are all about helping individuals find stability. It entails everything pertaining to service to humanity. It ranges from providing guidance and counseling services to providing basic needs such as food and shelter and substance abuse treatment. The main objective of human service provision is to help individuals find happiness and become self-sufficient. Essentially, human services use interdisciplinary knowledge base to meet human needs. Human services focus on preventing and addressing life problems. The profession promotes services by addressing the quality of direct services and improving accountability, accessibility, and coordination among agencies and professionals in service delivery. Human service is all about doing what is within one’s capacity to make a difference.

More specifically, Human Services means using one’s position to make a positive impact in society. Human services are all about using the resources and skills at hand to help people that are most deserving. In matters of human services, the field that interests me the most has to do with the rights of women and children. I am drawn to these matters because I feel that compared to other populations, women and children are the most vulnerable. They face many social problems, including gender-based violence, poverty, sexual harassment, and discrimination. I want to use my position to make a difference in their life. I once worked as a volunteer in a rights organization that provided legal aid services to women and children that have been victims of violations. Those six months were the most fulfilling part of my life. I am happy to have contributed positively to the lives of vulnerable women and children.

From my standpoint, an effective human service professional should possess the ability to bond with people. In this line of work, one cannot function effectively if one does not to relate well with other people. At the end of the day, human services is all about dealing with people and having a personal connection is critical. Competent human services professionals should also listen actively. In their line of work, they interact with multiple people and it is imperative that they practice active listening so that they can figure out the best way to help them overcome their problems. They should practice talking less and listening more. This way, their clients will trust them even more with their problems.

Some of the benefits that come with working in the field of human service provision are fulfillment, exposure, and monetary benefits. As a human service professional, one gets to interact with many people on a day-to-day basis. The majority of the time, one is often dealing with people, traveling, and attending meetings as well as conferences. The profession provides the perfect opportunity to network and meet like-minded people. Also, the satisfaction that comes with the profession is immeasurable. After a long day of serving people and helping them out with various problems, one goes home fulfilled. Knowing that one is making a positive impact in people’s lives is the best feeling ever. Additionally, the profession comes with many monetary benefits as the field offers competitive remuneration and benefits.

One of the drawbacks of working in human service provision is burnout. As a human service worker, one is constantly dealing with clients that are facing challenging life experiences. To help them, one has to lend them a listening year and from there decide the best way to help them. This can cause the professional to be traumatized and become emotionally drained. For this reason, human service professionals should have debriefing sessions where they discuss and reflect on the issues that cause fatigue and burnout. Another setback associated with the experience is the high workload. At times caseloads get higher which can be overwhelming especially if there is understaffing.

The populations that I am interested in working with are drug addicts. I am passionate about helping young people transform their lives and it breaks my heart to see them lose themselves to drugs every day. The role of a Human Service Professional working with drug addicts is to guide them through the recovery process so that they can become productive members of society. Their first role is to help them diagnose their problem. It takes a strong person to admit that they have a problem and seek help. If the clients take this first step, it is the duty of the human services professional to help them devise a plan to help them attain their goal, which includes providing mental health services.

Some of the trainings I think would be beneficial to the population of drug abusers and addicts is the Drug Addiction Recovery Program for Social workers. The training is ideal as it provides educational support for professionals. The training would be helpful in dealing with recovering addicts as it equips a person with skills and knowledge about how to deal with a drug abuser. The training also takes a person through the steps that a professional should take in helping their client deal with the problem of addiction. It shows the professional the best cause of action and diagnosis and even ways of determining the severity of the client’s condition.
